i am an architect!

finally, after 5 long years, i have collected my important piece of paper! and it's so important that they had to make it too big to fit in my backpack... took some time to figure out a good spot to place it so it doesn't get crumpled. anyway, now that i'm armed with my important piece of paper, i'm going to go back to singapore and wave it in front of everybody and hopefully they'll give me lots of money! yay!

i need to post photos ugh! i need internet connection desperately.

and i miss singapore! and things associated with it of course :)

Shortline Strikes Back!

just great. two days before i'm supposed to take the bus to nyc to get my parents, shortline workers decide to go on strike, cancelling all buses between cornell and nyc. and i only found out this morning. of course i don't blame them, since the company's probably being an asshole to the employees, but come on! why now? why not like, 25th or something!? i really don't see why the problems of the world have to become my problem too. i'm just an innocent cornell student -- i pay my tuition (kind of), i work hard (ok quite hard) in class, i am courteous, i don't spend too much money unnecessarily, i go to church, i take out the trash and wash the dishes, i try to smile whenever i can, and i don't go making life difficult for other people!

why make life difficult for me!

haha anyway. i found out at 5:07 that the last bus to depart ithaca today was greyhound, at 5:10. hence i am now in nyc with nothing on me except wallet, keys and hp. thank you so much katie for driving me down to the bus terminal with 0 seconds notice. and for helping me to finish up my laundry which i had no time to think about. that was crazy man. thank God the bus was a little late or else that's it liao. the greyhound bus driver was nice! he stopped at a mcdonald's halfway, pissing off half the bus and making the other half really happy. i was the other half. got my drink and mcchicken and fries and life became a whole lot better suddenly. thank God for mcdonalds.

and thank God for my dear friend yongchuan who once again became my innkeeper for the night. he's so nice to me! can't remember how many times i've slept over at his place without him even grumbling a little bit :) hope i can repay you one day man, anything just ask me k i will try my best!

i miss my family. so sad that meimei's not coming to see my graduation, but at least everyone else is. can't wait to see them at the airport! i better drive safely... somebody pray for me please! hopefully this will be a nice vacation for my family, and for me as well!

and come on shortline, please give your employees a little more money lah dun be stingy can.

Goodbye Lenin

I GOT AN F!

For the first time in my life, I have obtained an F for a course. and in the very last semester of my university career! i must admit, getting an F does not feel good at all. In fact, it feels absolutely shitty and definitely made me lose my appetite for at least two meals straight.

the consolation is that the F is quite temporary. turns out that the Game Theory course that i had dropped early in the semester was still reflected in my course schedule, and both the professor and the registrar thought i was taking it. i, of course, was totally clueless since i could have sworn i dropped it electronically after two lectures. so basically, at the end of the semester, the TA writes me an email saying that because i didn't take any of the exams they have to give me an F and i was like wth!#*&$#(*&!. i wrote to my registrar who's like well i guess you thought you dropped by our system doesn't show it so too bad! you can petition to drop the course next year.

and i'm like, dude, next year moi is in singapore can? alumni already can?

luckily, i remembered i had petitioned to take 11 credits this semester (as compared to 15 if i had taken this course) and i replied the registrar saying that since there are records of me taking only 11 credits, this has to be a mistake. and thank God she said ok fine, she'll drop it. and thank God I remembered to pray!

moral(s) of the story:

1. never assume, always check, whenever digital data is being handled.
2. prayer is powerful. absolutely powerful.
3. God is great.

sweeney todd

is so cool! if i'm a girl, i would so want him. love the deep gravelly voice, the brooding eyes, the crooked teeth, and the hair!

can't really type much now tho cos the tv is on and we're watching cartoon network! can't believe that i'm going to go back home soon and actually have a tv in my house... but i'll probably not have time to watch anything anyway.

sigh... i'm already starting to miss the carefree days of being a student, now that i'm not technically a student anymore...how how? can i still do phd? please?

or can you come back and work too?

broken melodies
i cannot bear to look.

snakes streaking down the highway
into a forest of piled up dreams
and reluctant smiles.

i want need yearn.

deliver me please
from this silence that catches in my throat
and twists my insides
and makes it so hard to breathe.

blue mountain lake, adirondacks, ny

we got to row boat at the adirondacks! feels like obs days man... except thankfully heidi is a good paddler and we didn't go in circles unlike my experience with my RJC obs partner. the lodge we stayed in had a black fly infestation however, so we had to spend some time making friends with the flies. they were rather annoying.

now it's off to owls head mountain for our hike, which hopefully will not involve rain or flies. so sad, first and last hike of the road trip!

i miss my flyns.

photos soon.

Almost Done!

Here's a snippet of my independent study I did this semester with Ezra Ardolino (my professor). I think it's pretty cool! And tomorrow, after I hand in my take-home exam THAT'S IT! I'M DONE! woohoo! this sem has been a blast man, even though this last stretch has been more killer than i thought it would be. 2 almost-all-nighters in a row... and not to forget my poor computer bending over backwards to render my movies. i love my inspiron! even though the screen is a little flappy now... but still, good job! *patpat*

Romads apis nomadis

Romads are quasi-intelligent creatures that currently inhabit the subterranean landscape of the Singapore urban rail network. Their body structure comprises three double-jointed legs; a body supporting a rigid shell covered with a soft padding; and a hemispherical head protruding from the center of the shell.

The Head
The romad head is embedded with three proximity sensors pointing in different directions. These sensors enable the romad to maneuver in its environment, as well as to interact with its neighbors.

The Body
The romad’s three arms are continuous with its head, and rigidly support a hexagonal shell. This shell is made up of a hard cartilage below and a soft, leathery padding on top. The romad’s body lies under its shell, and is also capable of producing a soft incandescent glow.

The Legs
The romad moves on its three legs which are supported on wheels. The legs themselves are capable of flexing, allowing the romad to change its height. It appears that the romads raise themselves up when moving, and lower themselves when in a rest position.

Habitat
Romads inhabit the underground station platforms along the urband rail network. They have never been observed wandering into subway trains, and they also appear to maintain a distance from major exits as well as elevators and escalators.

Varieties and Behavior
Romads are differentiated into two distinct types -- Reds and Whites. The Reds are highly territorial, each occupying a localized region around the numerous power ports embedded in a station’s floors, never wandering beyond a 2ft radius of their ports. The Reds are also equipped with a specialized tubular structure which extends from their undersides to plug into power ports at regular intervals. This provides the Reds with energy, which the Whites can only obtain by attaching themselves to the Reds.

The Whites are nomadic in nature, and also exist in greater numbers than the Reds, outnumbering them around 6 to 1. Their wandering tendencies only curbed when at intervals of 4 hours, the Reds settle down over their electrical ports to “feed”. During this period, which typically lasts about 20 minutes, the Reds emit an incandescent glow which attracts the Whites and causes them to gravitate towards the nearest Red, as well as responding with their own glow. The electro-magnetic nodes at the tips of their arms enable the romads to transfer energy to each other, thus causing them to aggregate into honeycomb configurations during the “feeding” period. When “feeding” is over, the Whites disperse again to resume their wandering.

Occasionally however, a White may also settle down and attract nearby Whites, forming temporary and short-lived localized groupings. This behavior does not appear to serve any functional purpose and also produces more varied configurations, unlike the Red-centric clusters formed during “feeding” periods.

When a White is forcefully stopped, such as when a human commuter sits on its shell, it will also start to glow and attract other Whites, forming a temporary cluster.

Romads move at a slow, constant glide, with a maximum speed about half the walking pace of an average human.

Interactions With Humans

The romads are social creatures that exhibit an ambiguous affinity towards humans, especially the young and elderly. They tend to move towards areas with higher densities of commuters waiting for trains to arrive, but do not initiate any contact with them. Humans however, have found the romads extremely useful as seating appliances, particularly due to their soft leathery shells, and sturdy form -- a romad is able to support up to 600lb in weight.

Each romad is big enough to seat 3 people, and once it is rendered immobile, it attracts other romads towards it, providing more seating. This behavior creates novel organizational patterns among commuters, and has been shown to stimulate interactions between strangers which otherwise would not have occurred.

Romads also tend to cluster together when the movements around them increase in speed. This has proven particularly useful during peak hours, as the clustering behavior reduces the likelihood of the romads becoming obstacles to commuter circulation. They have also not been found to cause any significant obstructions during fire evacuation drills.

Station controllers have therefore found no need to remove the romads from their habitat, although there were initial worries when they first appeared. Humans have even begun to further exploit the romads’ presence and behavior by affixing temperature sensors and bomb detectors on these wandering creatures in order to increase the security in urban rail stations, guarding against threats of terrorism as well as epidemics. Romads have yet to display any averse reactions to the attachment of these devices to their bodies.

Overall, the romads’ colonization of urban rail stations has been welcomed by administrators and the public alike. Through interactions with these creatures, commuters are also socializing to a greater degree, challenging the notion of “familiar strangers” that has been so pervasive in our urban society.

toby

is an eco bunny. made of 100% organic cotton, toby recycles, removes greenhouse gases, harnesses solar energy, eliminates poverty, fights terrorism, promotes fair trade and also manages to be extremely cute at the same time. he was made in Vermont, USA -- not People's Republic of China. he is also a he, despite a lack of defining features. toby does not live in a cage like the other toby, and is free to roam around the house. toby likes carrots, celery and broccoli, and yoplait yoghurt.

grad nie!

Finally, a real grad night for me! Well, all of them were real lah, but this time i'm REALLY done. as long as i pass all my final exams and stuff. looking back on this year, i am very grateful that i got to know a bunch of great people, which had seemed very unlikely considering i'm the last surviving member from my batch of CUSporeans07. It helps that no one really treated me like I was 26 years old (i'm so not.) which was good. so i will miss all of you! now i'm going to go back to Singapore and all my friends are gonna treat me like a little kid cos by the time i start working they would have already worked for more than a year! but it's ok. i will out-earn every single one of you!!!!!!

risk management

quite painful to witness actually, despite the brave fronts. but then you paint rainbows in my head and i can imagine that everything is ok.

in other news, i get the 3rd floor bedroom! with the piano! and all because some dude says that the piano will fall apart if we so much as move it an inch from its current position. well, i think it's going to be good though, cos i really really wanna learn how to play jazz, or at least my own songs! and this also means that i get to look out the front of the house instead of the back, which is refreshing.

i want to paint my room /pls /pls. more than 1 colour.

starbucks song

i'm looking at you
there's a smile on your face
and i swear i have never seen a girl like this

i hear your voice
you're talking to yourself
but i can't hear no one else
in this crowded room

i see your hands
they are folding a rose
and i've never seen a flower
so beautiful

if only you love me too

i get us our drinks
you whisper your thanks
and i know that i'll never go thirsty again

you're sipping your tea
and staring at me
across the rim of your cup those eyes are sparkling like the sea

oh it's snowing outside
but i'm melting in here
and there's nowhere in the universe i'd rather be

if only you love me too

if only you love me too
i'll paint the skies for you
i'll sing you songs till the moon turns blue
if only you love me too

you say the night is still young
can we talk for awhile
and i'm floating so high i must be grinning like a child

we talk for hours
but it seems like such a flash
and all too soon we see them stacking up the chairs

so you get up to go
and i follow behind
and you give your flower to the waiter standing by

oh if only you love me too

if only you love me too
i'll paint the skies for you
i'll sing you songs till the moon turns blue
if only you love me too
