We Kill Time

darkened skies above
whitewash below
hunched figures trudging through
a swirling alien glow
tyres cutting transient streaks
across a virgin snow

the trees are drowning.

hands pressed onto a frozen window pane
the world coming in and out
of focus
with each breath
my heart cracks
my head spins

and a river freezes over.

a memory dies
or goes dormant, or sleeps
who knows? beneath the surface
hearts pump, creatures dance, oblivious
to an ancient choreograph

we kill time, and time kills all of us.
